Binder moderately scuffed and worn, pages near fine with just a touch of toning to old adhesive and a bit of corner wear. A typed manuscript and rehearsal binder for a play by an important writer and theater critic, very heavily hand-annotated with corrections, stage diagrams and directions, cast and crew names, phone numbers and assorted other notes. The play had its West Coast premiere on May 17, 1985, and the binder reflects rehearsal dates from 1983. Charles Marowitz (1934-2014) was born in New York but moved to London in his teens to pursue theater. He co-founded the Royal Shakespeare Company Experimental Group in 1967 and one year later founded London’s Open Space Theatre, serving as Artistic Director until returning to the United States in the 1980s. He founded the Open Theatre of Los Angeles in 1982 and was Associate Director of the Los Angeles Theatre Center from 1984 to 1989. He was also the co-founder of «Encore» magazine (published between 1954 and 1965), a regular contributor to both the New York and London «Times,» among other theater publications, an adjunct instructor of theater at Pepperdine University, and lead theater critic for the Los Angeles «Herald-Examiner.» Marowitz authored the 1987 play «Sherlock’s Last Case» which appeared on Broadway with Frank Langella in the lead role. His play «Murdering Marlowe,» an imagined rivalry between William Shakespeare and Christopher Marlowe, was selected as a finalist for the GLAAD Media Awards of 2002. «The Marowitz Shakespeare: Adaptions and Collages of Hamlet, MacBeth, the Taming of the Shrew, Measure for Measure, and the Merchant of Venice» was published by Marion Boyars of London in 1978. The present play was reviewed in Vol. 38, No. 1 of «Theatre Journal» (March 1986) informing that: «It was 1965 when Charles Marowitz first astounded, outraged, amused, and horrified audiences with his collage of Hamlet» in which «the text is broken and reassembled, lines deleted, assigned to other characters, restructured. Marowitz’s purpose in so doing is to present more clearly his interpretation of the play: Hamlet as slob, as ineffectual intellectual, as spoiled brat, as bad actor.» The review called it «sexy,» «grotesque,» «campy» and «funny» and noted that it was adopted by the Los Angeles High Schools «as an introduction for students, who volunteer enthusiastically to read the original.» Special nods were given to the stage design, lighting and costumes, and the performances were deemed to «consistently delight. One leaves the theatre invigorated and refreshed.» Marowitz’ copious notes entertain in their own right – the character list described Hamlet as «a loser,» Laertes a «playboy», Ophelia «Schizoid,» Osric a «Las Vegas fop» and the Ghost, a «vengeful old codger.» His signature is prominent on the title page. A rare manuscript of an important playwright, critic, teacher and director. The UK’s Victoria and Albert Museum has a biographical file on the author, and a manuscript for «Sherlock’s Last Case» is held by the University of Minnesota. Pepperdine University has Marowitz’ collection relating to a theater group he founded in the 1990s, and two scripts for actual Shakespeare plays that note Marowitz as a contributor are housed at France’s Bibliothèque Nationale, but we found no evidence of this script, nor any rehearsal binder, anywhere but in our hands.
