DESCRIPTION: – Giant 1860s mounted albumen photograph by Adolphe Terris. The image is 10.5 x 15 inches in size – the paper mount is 14 x 18 inches. The image is titled: ANTEE – Mature flottante de la portee de 50 tonnes employee a la pose des blocs artificiels. The image was apparently taken by Terris who was hired by the City to document various streets, buildings and other facilities. The photograph is not dated, but based upon his documented work, it appears this was made some time in the early to mid-1860. Terris Phot ADOLPHE TERRIS INFORMATION: Adolphe Terris was a founding member of the Société Marseillaise de Photographie, and was commissioned over a nearly 20-year period beginning in the early 1860s to document the large-scale public construction projects that were modernizing the city of Marseilles. He photographed the medieval streets of the old city as well as the newer railroad tracks, canals, boulevards, and government buildings. Born in Aix-en-Provence, he moved to Marseille in 1850 where he worked in the book trade and published a collection of gravures of the history of the City in association with Martinon. Parallel to these activities, he founded his photographic studio in 1852. A founding member of the Société Marseillaise de Photographie, Adolphe Terris was commissioned over a nearly 20-year period beginning in the early 1860s to document the large-scale public construction projects that were modernizing the city of Marseilles. He photographed the medieval streets of the old city as well as the newer railroad tracks, canals, boulevards, and government buildings. The city commissioned Terris a number of times including: 1862. The City commissioned 26 views of the «Old streets of Marseille demolished for Imperial street 1864. Grands Travaux de Marseille – 1864 «(about 55 views), 1866. «Opening and construction of the Imperial Street from 1863 to 1866» (20 views, 1869. An album on the construction of the Palais Longchamp EBAY LISTING PHOTOS: – I included a Kodak 35mm cassette so you can see that it is a very large image. I used a Pentax digital camera to take the photographs. Much too big for my scanner. The photos of the entire image are a very good representation of the tones and details of the photo. The close-up photos of the boat and the information tend to be darker than actual. CONDITION: – See Photos – Photo has some marks and blemishes. The tones are a bit light. The mount seems very nice, except the Lower right corner is soft. PHOTOGRAPH TYPE: – This is an original vintage photograph – not a modern copy. Bid With Confidence!!
