Item Description & Preservation: For the collector of Bavarian, German Judaica. This is a very important publication printed in honor of the installation of the reform rabbi, Rabbi Dr. Isaac Lowi as Grand Rabbi of Furth. The event was held on March 21, 1831, as indicated on title page. Includes a forward from page 3-4 and then the main text from pages 5-38, and then a rear page. The photo of him is not included in the sale, and just shown for illustration purposes. This is a very important artifact of the early Reform movement in the most important city of Bavaria. The relationship of this personality to his gentile counterparts and the reforms he instituted were very meaningful to the future trajectory of German jewry. This rabbi’s personality and political acumen put him at the confluence of many important historical accounts and actions with other famous people. This is a fascinating relic which assists in our knowledge and understanding of those times. Rare. Antrittsrede Des Herrn Dr. Isaak Lowi Bei Seiner Installation als Rabbiner Zu Furth, gehalten am 21. Furth. Julius Volkhartscher Druck. Inaugural address of Dr. Isaak Lowi During his installation as Rabbi of Furth, held on March 21, 1831. In addition to the speech of the mayor’s election commissioner B. Baumen and a brief account of the celebrations that took place at the ceremony. The profits are intended for charitable purposes. Furth. Julius Volkhartscher printer. Isaak Loewi, also: Isaac Loewi, Löwy, Löwi or Levi (born January 31, 1803 in Adelsdorf, died December 25, 1873 in Fürth) was chief rabbi in Fürth from March 21, 1831 until his death in 1873 Isaak Loewi was very influential for the Jewish community in Fürth. When he died, the whole city of Fürth mourned along with the Jewish community («Respected and much loved»). He had been married to Rosalie Sofie Kohn since November 17, 1828 and had nine children with her – seven sons and two daughters. There is a street in Furth named after him ‘Isaak Loewi Strasse’. His grave is still in the old Jewish cemetery today. Life & Work: Isaak Loewi was born on January 31, 1803 in Adelsdorf near Erlangen (Upper Franconia at that time, now Middle Franconia). He attended the Talmud University in Fürth. In Munich he studied and obtained his doctorate in philosophy. In 1827 he was called to Uehlfeld as a rabbi. In Fürth, after the death of the highly respected Chief Rabbi Meschullam Salman Kohn in 1819, there had been long conflicts between the Bavarian government and the predominantly Orthodox community, so that the choice of a successor repeatedly failed. In 1830, Samson Wolf Rosenfeld was the orthodox candidate against the reform Rabbi Loewi in the election in Fürth, in the largest Bavarian community. «Rosenfeld was generally considered to be orthodox, with a certain reformist touch (he could write in German), and his choice would certainly have been made,» if Meschullam Salman Kohn’s son-in-law had voted for him. Finally, Mayor Baumen was asked for a decision. He stood up for the Reform Rabbi Dr. Isaak Loewi On December 31, 1830, the Bavarian government confirmed Loewi as rabbi in Fürth, and had already decreed his appointment and ordered his installation despite the complaints. It was not until March 10, 1831 that Dr. Loewi secured the position. On Monday, March 21st, 1831 he was solemnly introduced to his new congregation. Numerous Christians and all magistrates took part in the celebration. Dr. Phil. Loewi was the first liberal rabbi in Fürth. Among other things, he had also studied with his predecessor Rabbi Meschullam Salman Kohn and with Wolf Hamburger in Fürth. It is thanks to his great influence that in Fürth the liberal view of Judaism, which strove for integration into general society, prevailed against the orthodox view, which insisted on maintaining all traditional peculiarities in everyday life. Fürth became the place of real integration under this rabbi in the 19th century. «The Jews of Fürth, who had already contributed a lot to the upswing of Fürth in the 18th century, now pushed the industrialization of the city forward. Many of them got rich and made countless foundations. now the whole city benefited from them. » Immediately after taking office, Loewi announced comprehensive reforms for his community and implemented more contemporary forms of religious custom. In 1831 he had the main synagogue restored, which fundamentally changed the building that had existed since 1617. He had a gallery built in the synagogue for the women who had previously attended the Jewish worship service in the adjoining rooms. He introduced prayers, singing and sermons in German and supported the development of the city. So campaigned for the establishment of the trade association and the trade school. The city was well-known for his good relationship with his Protestant and Catholic colleagues. During his time as Chief Rabbi, there was massive criticism of his sermons and his zeal for liberal reform among the conservative Jews. Some of his Orthodox critics even tried to force him out of office. This dispute in the Fürth Jewish community was also carefully observed nationwide and documented in the press. This affected the rabbi very much and he needed to withdraw from the strife in order to regain his strength for a while. Dr. Loewi campaigned very strongly for equality for Jews in Bavaria. That is why he was visited on December 4, 1866 by King Ludwig II in the Fürth synagogue. In 1868 King Ludwig II passed a law that lifted all restrictions on Jews in Bavaria. In 1869, Rabbi Dr. Isaak Loewi received the Bavarian Royal Merit Order of Saint Michael 1st class. However, before he received the Bavarian Order of Merit from the Bavarian King Ludwig II, a statement was obtained from the government in Ansbach, in which Loewi’s services to the Jewish community as well as to the city in general were listed. But it was also noted that Loewi is said to have spoken out in favor of the People’s Party in the most recent state election. However, the reporter then came to the conclusion that Loewi would not have «extreme political views» Isaak Loewi, auch: Isaac Loewi, Löwy, Löwi oder Levi (geb. 31. Januar 1803 in Adelsdorf, gest. 25. Your item(s) will be shipped carefully, cushioned, and protected within whichever carrier wrapper being used.
